I learned a great deal about printing over the course of the semester and especially in Tuesday’s class. I learned that there are so many different varieties of  paper finishes, weights, and colors. I also had never previously realized that ink comes in so many various forms and its usage depends on how you want the final product to look and on what paper stock. This message really sunk in when we saw how the one color red was absorbed and showed on all different papers.

Great Web Design

The first website EW I chose is one where I spend a large portion of my time, EW’s site. Entertainment Weekly’s website is geared to fans of pop culture, past and present and gives updates, reviews and features about anything entertainment. They redid their website about a year or so ago and it looks much better now. They have a slideshow of their top articles that change multiple times over the course of the day and information is neatly divided into subsections of entertainment, which I enjoy because it’s very to locate whatever information you are looking for. The website also uses bright shades of red and blue in the background to grab readers attention. The only thing I would change on their site are the persistent, irritating pop-ads that urge you to subscribe to the magazine, which I already do, so it’s really annoying.

The second website I love because of its simplicity and it’s one whose design I never really thought about before, but I love Google. The web design is so simple and clean that it is incredibly effective, the bright primary colors of the word Google immediately attract the viewer’s eye and dominate the entire site, because that’s basically all there is besides the search bar and bars that take you to the other page. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of whatever typeface that is, but I love the innovation of the Google company and how they realized their name is the most interesting part of the site and they change it for special occasions, I personally look forward to seeing it on holidays and what designs they’ve come up with.

Another of my favorite site’s is for Sephora, a store that sells make-up and beauty products. It’s obviously targeted more towards women, but keeps it simple with black and white colors that match its’ storefronts. However, I also like the repetition of the hot pink color in the current site. The color contrasts with the normal black and white, which immediately grabs my attention. The theme is also repeated in various places throughout the site on gift items, I like that they kept it consistent.

Lastly,  I really enjoy the website for another new place in Syracuse, Chipotle. The giant burrito is very attention catching as is the music that first plays when the site loads. The site makes a little noise for parts of the site, which a think is an effective and unique aspect, if not slightly grating. My favorite part of their site however, is the pull string on the bottom, which allows you to actually pull it up and read all about their mission to serve “food with integrity”. The purpose of the site is to allow readers to learn more about the company and its products as well as to place an online order, all of which their site accomplishes.

A Very Pink Spread

I think that the typography in this spread is very effective. The embellishments and effects used to turn Pink into a tattoo are incredibly eye catching and helps to draw the reader into the article. The headline is also very easy to read in addition to being attention grabbing. The designers also created a very catchy color gestalt with variations of Pink, clearly a play on the artist’s name. The text of her name also jumps out at the reader from the hot pink background which gives the text an added dimension.

The deck head is in bold and in all caps and intrigues the reader into following the story, which claims to show the reader a softer side of the tough girl, Pink. The deckhead also sits neatly right above the highly readable beginning of the story, gently easing the viewer into reading, at least the start of the article. This ideology was also followed in the opposite page, where Pink is wearing light pink clothing on a light background, and the pull quote states that her heartbreak is turned into songs that help other people, also written in a pink hue. The page is not overcrowded with text and the combination of headline deckhead and pull quote, all lure a reader into reading the article. Everything in the layout works well together, but it’s aided heavily by an easy to read, bold serif typeface.

Spinning the Color Wheel

1. Spot Color

This Vogue India cover took the color of Gauri Khan’s dress and used it to highlight its headlines, it makes for a very eye-catching front cover.

2. Duotones

This cover of the Economist uses a blue hue to make the reader take Martin Sheen very seriously.

3. Complementary Colors

This Fantastic Four poster uses orange and blue, complementary colors, to create contrast.

4. Triadic harmonies

This Andy Warhol-ian dollar sign poster, uses the colors blue, red, and yellow, a triadic harmony, to make the design pop.

5. Analogous colors

This spread, from Martha Stewart Living, warm shades of pink and yellow, colors that sit conveniently next to each other on the color wheel.


Happiness on the Bridge

I really enjoy the use of color in this spread, which is incredibly attention getting. The balloons in the left hand corner catch a reader’s attention and then lead you right into the headline, as they are on the same eye level. The balloons are also all primary colors, which are vibrant.

The red balloon is a warm color, which as we learned in class, means it comes forward and grabs your attention as does the yellow balloon. The yellow balloon also matches the model’s blouse, and the red balloon goes with her sunglasses.

The model and her balloons are a striking contrast to the background, because although the Brooklyn Bridge is gorgeous, the tan and grey bricks make for a boring background. I also like the conscious repetition of color, because while some balloons match the model’s ensemble, the blue and green balloons match the headline on the opposite page.

The design also works well with the headline, which encourages readers to “get into a happiness habit”, the model is clearly overjoyed to be on the bridge, with her balloons. The design effectively surrounds the text and leads the reader directly to the article. The deckhead also catches attention and brings you into the story. This story was in Self magazine, and I think for women who are simply flipping through the magazine would be enticed to read the article.

My only suggestion would be making the photo bleed onto the second page of the spread, because the first words of every line of text seems to get lost in the spine of the magazine,.
