There is always a reason to design

After taking graphics 217, I learned how to do things I never thought I would be able to do. I learned how to use indesign and photoshop in ways I never thought I would be able to. With that said, I can see myself utilizing these skills in the future, not necessarily while working for a company but freelancing or perhaps working on the side for designing websites/portfolios/brochures for friends or family that need a design to be made.

On Tuesday I learned that anyone, including students and non-professionals (as some of Sherri’s students interested in photography did) can have something printed at a printer for christmas presents or any distribution. I could see myself, in the near future, designing a portfolio, book or album of friend’s photographs and having it printed for them. The accessibility to professional printing is awesome because, that way, I can continue designing on my own time without it even being my full-time job.

Organization, color, typography and visual image when executing a successful web design

Lauren Conrad Online is a fan website dedicated to Lauren Conrad, the MTV reality star, author and fashion designer.

I like this website because of the typography used. The script is very elegant, yet stands out on the slant and directs the eye up and down the page in a very effective way. I also like how the headers are in different fonts and sizes, it is very fun and shows the fun, laid back, trendy side of who Lauren Conrad really is, all through representation of type. I also love how the type text wraps around the image of her body, it is creative and organized well.

 

 

The website for Cosmopolitan Magazine is the website connected to the women’s health, fashion and gossip magazine.

I feel this design is very successful because of its color repitition and consistency. Bright pink is the main color of the website and I love that the design uses it all the way through to emphasize what is important and the big headers. Also, even though it is small, the & signs between the navigation bar headlines connect well because of the use of bright pink. Once again, the color helps direct the eye as it should be directed because the pink is so heavy on the top, so as we move down, our eye tends to catch on all the pink accents.

 

The website for The Empire Hotel NYC is an excellent website to look at. Immediately, I love the picture and I love how the entire design is so well-planned based on what the designer had to work with, from the picture. In terms of selling its product, a room at the Empire Hotel in NYC, the website does a great job. The picture completely captures the vision of the hotel: elegant, trendy and cozy. I love how the logo is brass E’s, representative of the door knobs entering the hotel. The first thing you notice is the picture and I think the image is the strong selling point of the website.

It is difficult to find an image, usually, that brings you in right away, especially as a main focal point on a website. In this particular design, the image screams loud and clear; The simple use of beige/gold on the rest of the site, just taking what is given in the picture is also brilliant and makes it a clean design.

 

Chop\’t Salad Online is a website for the chain/to go restaurants called Chop’t. Chop’t is a make-your-own-salad place located in a few different cities, including NYC and London.

This website caught my eye because the organization is very different than any other site I have seen. The headers go down on the left, as opposed to across a bar on the top. I find this very interesting and when done well, is quite successful. In this particular case, there are lines seperating each option, which is helpful, when using that style to break it up. Also, the type is bolded and bigger so that there is no confusion as to what all those terms mean. I like this tactic in this particular design because when trying to make a website simple, with a lot of white space, its nice to switch up other aspects of the design. In this case, there is one picture of a salad and like the ingredients in the salad, all the options are piled up next to the image. I love when designs go hand-in-hand with the dominant image in a creative way.

Repetition of Typography in a Magazine Design

There are three different fonts on this particular magazine spread. Harper’s Bazaar tends to reuse its logo typography a lot within the magazine content, which I think is very strong. It is unclear to me what the name of the type is but they use repitition to reiterate how they want their magazine to be represented. In this case, “Style” is what they want Bazaar to represent, so they chose to keep the same type for the word style as they have for bazaar. I like that personal is a chunky san serif with not much personality, while style is a more modern serif type, creating class and sophistication with new and inventive.

Color is combined with type in this spread as well. The white really stands out on the colorful background of the woman and the dress. The white contrasted on the green makes it readable and fun. The white also matches the doors, which shows consistency and leads the eye to the text.

The hierarchy of information is clear through the typography as well, making “Personal Style” stand out more than anything else, it gives the reader the chance (at first glance) to decide if he or she is really interested in reading further. It is important and successful that the deck head and bylines are italicized. Italics give the information relevance, while differentiating it from the caption and the headline.

This typography and design has visual consistency, is legible and with excellent tracking and leading gives the reader space for flow and time to digest the important information.

Spot Color

This magazine cover uses different shades of pantone pink spot color to successfully execute gestalt color repetition with very bright colors.

Duotones

This duotone in National Geographic is very well-colored because it uses a brown tone on black and white, creating a sepia color on skin color, with white type as a contrast.

Analogous Color

Pink, purple and red are neighbors on the color wheel, which makes them analogous colors, working very strongly together in this magazine cover design.

Complimentary Colors

Green and red are complimentary colors because they are opposite each other on the color wheel, as red is the warmer color, it is smart that it was the color used less since the red stands out on its own while the green needs more help.

Triadic Harmonies

In this poster, green, orange and purple are very strong together, creating bright and noticeable contrast and unified design.

The power of Red

Whenever red is included in a graphic design, especially a magazine spread…I can’t help but notice and get sucked into the content. Red is considered a warm color and catches anyones attention. In this particular design from Glamour magazine, the repitition of the color red makes it even more strong, with the jacket, the lobster, the bow in her hair and the sign on the truck all a very vibrant red. The spread also uses gestalt by making the deckhead red as well.

Another reason I love this particular magazine spread is the color contrast. All of the other colors are dull, using primarily blacks and whites and beige. When red is put against colors like that, as opposed to being put with other warm colors like orange, it really makes the brightness stand out. Since the lobster is pointing inwards towards the other page (with the writing), the red pointed object moves our eyes.

Although a subtle connection, the bold black opposite the black tights and high heels is a great repitition that actually moves my eyes from the red color, down to her black tights and over to the bold black writing. The drop cap also helps since it is such a bold black, you can’t help but bring your eyes there after reading the red deckhead.

All in all, the red between the photograph  and the writing is what is directing the readers eye through the design and onto the writing.
